The journey of eSIM began back in 2019 with Telstra in Australia and was initially available only for select devices and business plans. The initial implementation was very cumbersome, and customers needed to go to physical stores to receive their profile via SMS.
So, what is eSIM profile?
eSIM (Embedded SIM) technology offers many advantages, like seamless connectivity and easier switching between carriers, but integrating it into a digital experience presents several challenges:
User Onboarding Complexity
Activation Process: Activating an eSIM profile can be confusing for users, especially those who are accustomed to the simplicity of inserting a physical SIM card. The need to scan QR codes or enter manual activation details may introduce friction in the onboarding process.
Multiple Profiles Management: Users may struggle with managing multiple eSIM profiles, especially if they have different profiles for work, travel, or personal use. Clear guidance and a user-friendly interface are critical to prevent confusion.
Device Compatibility and Interoperability
Limited Device Support: Not all devices support eSIM, and even those that do may have varying levels of compatibility depending on the carrier. This can lead to frustration if users expect a seamless experience across different devices.
Carrier Lock-In: Some carriers may lock eSIM profiles to their network, limiting the user’s ability to switch networks easily, which goes against the promise of flexibility that eSIM offers.
Security and Privacy Concerns
Profile Security: Ensuring the security of eSIM profiles is crucial, as any vulnerability could lead to unauthorized access or SIM swapping attacks. This requires robust encryption and secure storage mechanisms.

Additionally, the journey should prevent customers from requesting multiple profiles unnecessarily, for reasons I’ll explain in the Operations Section below.
App Integration: Integrating eSIM management within existing apps or developing standalone apps for eSIM control must enhance the user experience without adding complexity. In my view, incorporating the entire journey into a single solution is optimal.
Connectivity and Network Performance
Network Issues: Users may encounter connectivity problems if their eSIM profile is incorrectly configured or if network-related issues arise. This can result in negative experiences, particularly in areas with unreliable network coverage. Additionally, based on experience, there are instances where the eSIM profile doesn’t match the device handset if purchased outside the service region — a situation that often requires Customer Care intervention.
Roaming and International Use: While eSIM offers potential advantages for international travellers, ensuring reliable connectivity across different regions and networks can be challenging, requiring robust partnerships between telecom providers.
Operational and logistics
Logistics: The digital nature of eSIM profiles introduces new complexities in inventory management. Unlike physical SIM cards that can be visually counted and tracked, eSIM profiles require sophisticated digital inventory systems. These systems must accurately track the number of available profiles, their status (e.g., provisioned, activated, or expired), and seamlessly integrate with the sales and activation processes. Furthermore, real-time inventory updates are crucial to prevent overselling or stockouts, which could lead to customer dissatisfaction and lost revenue opportunities.
Operations management in digital: Without appropriate limitations, customers might inadvertently or intentionally request multiple eSIM profiles, each of which carries an associated cost for the service provider. This unrestricted access could potentially lead to significant revenue loss, as the company would be absorbing the preparation costs for profiles that may never be utilized. Moreover, excessive profile requests could strain the system’s resources, potentially impacting service quality for other users.
Therefore, a well-designed digital operations management strategy should incorporate these limiting mechanisms as an integral part of the eSIM provisioning process. This approach not only helps in maintaining operational efficiency but also ensures a balance between customer convenience and the company’s economic interests. By implementing such controls, service providers can offer the flexibility of eSIM technology while safeguarding against potential misuse or unintended overuse of the system.
Addressing these challenges requires a combination of user education, thoughtful design, strong security measures, and seamless integration with existing digital experiences to ensure that eSIM technology delivers on its promise of enhanced flexibility and convenience.
